Do you want to hear some amazing numbers?  Here’s how many single women there are in the United States right now:

54 million women over 18 years old are single.* That’s 53% of the grand total of 102 million unmarried  US residents.  47%, or 47.9 million are  single men.

17 million people are over 65 are currently unmarried.

24.4 million of all ages have been divorced.  Another 14.2 million are widowed.  For the grand total of singles over 18 who have never been married: it’s  63.2 million.  Certainly, these numbers include everyone:  couples living together, same-sex households, younger men and women who are just starting out.  But even excluding the people who aren’t looking to meet someone new, there are still staggering numbers of singles living in the US.

Online dating is a robust business segment that is growing at 10% annually, even in a challenged economy. Your single friends and neighbors are online and you have probably exchanged stories with some of them. If they’ve had disappointing results, it may be because they didn’t know how to handle the process.  You deserve congratulations for doing research and reading this website.  It shows that you’re curious and want to have a positive experience.

If you are confused, you are not alone. Single women  are facing a time of great change about where they can meet available men with similar goals.  I’ve been single three times as an adult: in my twenties, in my thirties and in my sixties, and each time it’s been like a new world out there.

Today, the traditional means of meeting people to date are declining:  friends and family, workplace, church, school or community activities.  Thirty years ago, you would have counted on meeting a man this way.  One hundred and thirty years ago, most likely your marriage would have been arranged or, at the very least, approved by your father.  And having sex outside of marriage?  Perish the thought!!

Times change.  Thanks to digital devices which deliver information to our fingertips, millions of men and women have turned to online dating to find life partners, activity companions or casual sex.  What used to be an activity only practiced by a few early adopters has become standard operating procedure for singles trying to improve their social life.

If you’re a single woman over 40, the question is settled:  putting up a profile online is normal, commonplace and even expected. It’s no longer a wild experiment that you need to be ashamed of trying.
